The Feasts of Juninas (June Feasts) occur during the month of June in honor of St. John, St. Peter and St. Anthony. Historians say these celebrations were introduced in Brazil by the Portuguese during the colonial period.
Although celebrated throughout Brazil, it is in the northeast that the June Feasts are the most popular. Tradition is part of the celebrations. The June festivals come alive with bonfires that serve as the center for traditional dances. In the North-East region it is still very common to see groups of revelers who dance and sing in the streets of the city. Revellers will pass by houses, where residents leave food and drink on the window ledges and doorways. Since June is the harvest season of corn, much of the dishes connected to the celebrations, consist of corn.
In addition to entertaining locals, these holidays are also a moment of redemption for the entire north-east and many tourists visit the region to take part in the festivities. Most visitors are Brazilian, but it is increasingly common to see European, American and Asian tourists who come to Brazil to participate in this joyful festival.
During the month of June, towns are crowded and it is not easy to find accommodation in the main towns. Whoever wants to visit northeastern Brazil to attend the June Celebrations should book accommodation well in advance. The B&B Brazil website offers a wide array of accommodation at great rates in north east Brazil. Guests can choose from an ample selection of Bed & Breakfasts, Pousadas, hostels and apartments in the main towns of the region.
