A historic and charming city, it is the capital of Bahia state and the ancient capital of the country. It is divided in two parts: High town and Low town, connected one to the other by the imposing Lacerda lift that effects a vertical lapse of 85 metres, with a magnificent view on the Baia de Todos os Santos. Don't miss the Pelourinho, the wonderfully restored architectural ensemble, declared by UNESCO artistic heritage of humanity. It is a district in which you breathe the culture of the place, with its squares and daily art and music performances. Besides the historical ruins, Salvador is also the ideal shop-window of all traditions, contradictions and magic of this world. It is the symbol of Brazilian syncretism with an harmonic mix of races and cultures: European, Indigenous and especially African. Bahia sinks its roots in the ancient African world: Candomblè, a religion with very high number of followers, is an ancient cult devoted to the adoration of the Orixàs, gods of nature, to whom offers are made with a ritual of dance and music called capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art practiced with a rhythm of music in which there is no physical contact, but that consists in an agility competition. Gastronomy is very good and based on fish and sea food, with exotic dressings that remind of their African origin. Nightlife is exotic too and, in Salvador, it is often made of an explosive mix of magic, tradition and pure cheerfulness, following the rhythm of Afoxè, a kind of music now famous all over the world.
Festivity: - New Year's Eve (celebrated on the beach as much as Carnival) - Carnival ( 4 days of madness) - Lavagem do Bonfim (on the second Thursday of January - Religious and People Celebration, where the Cathedral's stairs are washed, and dancing parties are spread all around the city) - Celebration of Iemanjá (on the 2nd of February - one of the most popular celebration of the Candomblé, with Trios Electricos and afoxés) - São João Celebration (23rd and 24th of June - celebrated with fireworks and non-stop parties along the streets) - Celebration of Saint Barbara (4th-6th of December - Celebration of Candomblé markets, particularly famous the "Mercado do Peixe", Fish Market, in Rio Vermelho)
